3 Reasons You Should Give Back

I know you are working hard to better you and your families economic standing. Day in and day out you are working hard for what you earn. So, I often get asked why should I give back? I want to offer three reasons why you should work equally as hard to incorporate giving back in your life.

1.) You can actually make a difference. It is true, every little bit you do to make someone else’s life better is making a difference in your community and the global community. Giving back has a ripple effect, if you improve someone else’s life you give that person an opportunity to pass it on. The 2000 Mimi Leder film Pay it Forward really had it right, “I think some people are too scared, or something. I guess it’s hard for people who are so used to things the way they are – even if they’re bad – to change. ‘Cause they kind of give up. And when they do, everybody kind of loses.” – Trevor Mckenney. Don’t give up. Believe that when you give back it is changing the world and it will.

2.) Gain a new perspective. Life can be hard and often times you get into your own head worrying about your day to day woes and #1stWorldProblems. Giving back and stepping into someone else’s world for just a few moments allows you to gain perspective on your own problems. Seeing the struggles of others and helping them overcome their hardships will help you be more grateful and in turn make you a happier person.

3.) You are setting an example. Life is short. You are only a drop in the ocean of time. Everything you do is setting an example for your children and grandchildren. If we set a good example the world will change for the better over time. If we are closed off, bitter, and unwilling to give we are only blocking the progress of our local and global communities. Open your heart and be kind; teach your children to be kind and all that hard work you are putting in to improve their lives will be worth it because you will have changed the world.
